What we’re doing
We’re upgrading the aquatic centre gas heating to a more efficient electric system. This system will be powered by renewable electricity sourced through our renewable power purchase agreement.
The electrification project will replace the ageing natural gas assets that currently provide pool water heating and shower hot water with air-source heat pumps and thermal storage tanks. Similar upgrades have already been completed at Victoria Park Pool and Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool.
At the same time, we'll repair the 50m pool's lining system and handrails, repaint lane markings and maintain other pool infrastructure. Upgrading the pool during a planned closure will help reduce disruption for swimmers.
These works will improve the pool's environmental performance, support our transition to net zero emissions and help ensure the facility remains safe, efficient and reliable for years to come. The pool is expected to reopen ahead of the summer swimming season.
Why we’re doing this
We want to reduce emissions from our operations and transition away from fossil fuels. Electrifying Prince Alfred Park Pool is another important step in that process.
The project is part of our net zero framework for operations and contributes to achieving the targets set out in our environmental strategy 2025-2030.
Once completed, this project will mark the halfway point of our planned upgrades across aquatic facilities. By replacing gas-powered systems with highly efficient electric technology, we're reducing operational emissions while maintaining comfortable water temperatures and high-quality amenities for visitors.
How this may affect you
Prince Alfred Park Pool will be closed to the public while works take place.
Works begin after Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool reopens for the season on 1 September. During the works, 5 City of Sydney aquatic centres will remain open as nearby alternatives.
Victoria Park Pool in Camperdown is the nearest outdoor 50m pool and Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo is the closest indoor pool.
