By making a nomination, you accept these terms and conditions.

The City of Sydney reserves the right at any time to dismiss any nomination from an individual and/or organisation that has (in the City of Sydney’s view) breached any of the terms and conditions or engaged in any unlawful or other improper conduct.

Award categories

Youth categories

Category 1: Community

Individuals or groups who have contributed to local youth communities.

As volunteers, their contribution involves:

  • leading on issues relating to community life
  • participating in or organising programs and projects that benefit communities
  • raising and solving a problem they found within the communities.

Category 2: Equity, inclusion and diversity

This award recognises someone who has overcome hardship and grown personally or helped make our communities more inclusive for underrepresented groups. Areas may include:

  • culture
  • sexual orientation
  • gender
  • health and disability.

Category 3: Creative

Individuals or groups who have contributed significantly through drama, visual arts, digital media, literature, music or other art forms.

This may be demonstrated through:

  • involving the communities and audiences through their creative medium
  • helping others understand the importance of the arts through mentoring, teaching, fundraising and raising awareness.

Youth and service categories

Category 1: Youth Worker of the Year

Individuals who work with young people by developing programs and providing support to those in need. Examples include:

  • building positive relationships with young people
  • improving policy and practice
  • commitment to improving conditions for young people
  • developing relationships with communities, schools and referral organisations.

Category 2: Youth Service of the Year

Youth-focused groups or organisations who have provided excellent programs and services to young people in Sydney. Nominees must run a service directed to young people aged 13 to 25.

This year, there will be one winner from each Youth category. Each winner will receive a $500 voucher. There will also be one winner from each Youth Worker category, who will receive a trophy.

How to nominate

Nominations may be made by a third party using the online forma available on he City of Sydney website.

All nominations must be made by 5pm on Friday 15 March 2024.

Awards

This year, there will be one winner from each Youth category. Each winner will receive a $500 voucher. There will also be one winner from each Youth Worker category, who will receive a trophy.

The awards will be presented at the Betty Makin Youth Awards night on Tuesday 16 April from 4pm to 7pm at Redfern Town Hall.

There will be a photographer present to document the event. Attendees acknowledge and agree that photographs and video footage may be used by the City of Sydney in promotional material and other related uses such as Facebook, website pages or printed promotional material.

Names of the winners from each category will be published on the City of Sydney’s website.

How the nominations are judged

The Betty Makin Youth Awards will be determined by the City of Sydney at its absolute discretion, based solely on the information provided on the nomination forms. It is essential to include as much relevant information as possible. The nominations will be assessed and judged by one external judge and 2 City of Sydney employees. Decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into with respect to the outcome of the awards.

The intended recipient of the information is the Council of the City of Sydney. While the supply of this information is voluntary, the personal information you provide will enable your nomination to progress. Your personal information may be accessed by you and the Council of the City of Sydney. A request to access, update or correct any information should be directed to the Council of the City of Sydney at the address stated in the terms and conditions. The personal information collected will be stored by the Council of the City of Sydney, for the purposes indicated in the above terms and conditions. However, any personal information may be disclosed as required by law.
