Improving contraflow lanes in Sydney

Allowing bikes to travel in both directions on a street which is 1-way for motor traffic.

Project Status: In progress

What we’re doing

While contraflow lanes have existed for many years, in 2014 the state government allowed contraflow bike travel if simple approved signs and markings are installed.

This can improve connectivity and safety by giving people riding better access to low traffic routes, helping to make bike riding a more convenient option for short local trips.

Contraflow facilities can include installation of bicycle symbols, coloured pavement, line marking and signage to improve awareness of drivers.

Work includes Albert, Renwick and James streets in Redfern and Flora, Victoria and Munni streets in Erskineville and Newtown.
