Sustainable concrete road trial
In a world first trial, we’ve taken industrial waste from coal-fired power stations and steel manufacturing to create a new roadway.
Project Status: Completed
Works complete to trial a sustainable concrete road in Wyndham Street, Alexandria between Mandible Street and Bourke Road.
What we’re doing
The works involved renewing 2 sections of road. One section using a more sustainable blend of concrete and recycled material, and the other using traditional concrete.
The sustainable concrete blend uses an alternative cement that generates only 180 kilograms of CO2 per tonne, compared to 900 kilograms used in producing traditional cement.
University of NSW researchers monitored road performance for 3 months. The data will inform industry standards for using sustainable pavements in the future.
The works took place on the weekends of 30 to 31 March and 6 to 7 April 2019.
