A person stands next to a bicycle on a path with trees painted blue at the base. A bridge is visible in the background.

A reminder of the human impact on the environment.

Artwork description

Using a biologically safe water-based colourant, living trees are transformed to create The Blue Trees in Sydney for the first time.

Drawing attention to global deforestation by turning living, breathing trees bright blue, The Blue Trees demands we notice them before the planet’s old forests are gone for good. It briefly transforms a familiar urban landscape into a surreal, unfamiliar and even uncomfortable reminder of human impact on the environment.

Artist

Konstantin Dimopoulos is an Egyptian born, New Zealand-raised, Melbourne-based artist who created The Blue Trees in locations including outside St Paul’s Cathedral in London, around the US and at the 2015 Vancouver Biennale.

“I have always known that art is and has always been an extended part of nature and that art can effect social change. For that to happen, one has to move out of the art institutions and galleries and move outside among nature and people in their living spaces.”

– Konstantin Dimopoulos
