Sitelines and Conversations is a combined project highlighting the relationship between sites of historical and cultural significance and the intimate, hidden histories of the harbour.
We invite community members and their families who have connections and stories about any of the 9 proposed locations on Yananurala / Walking on Country.
The locations, shown in the map below, include:
Stories could be interpreted alongside the artwork through text, audio, video or landscaping interventions.
Following an open callout for submissions, Lucy Simpson, a Sydney based Yuwaalaraay designer from north-western NSW, was selected to create a series of sculptural forms to be located at specific points along the Yananurala walk. The work is inspired by the Ostrea angasi, or flat oyster, that was once prevalent in this place.
Large, abstracted forms, depicting the flat oyster will be located along the water’s edge. They encourage you to take a moment and connect – with your surroundings, with each other, and with the continuous living culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Yananurala project is part of our long-standing Eora Journey: Recognition in the public domain program, which includes a series of major public artworks by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
Curated by Emily McDaniel, Sitelines and Conversations is the first Yananurala project to be realised on the Sydney Harbour foreshore.
