Why we’re doing this
We regularly review our markets policy and guide to setting up a market on City of Sydney land to make sure they continue to support well-managed markets. These markets contribute to local communities and complement local businesses.
This review aims to make both documents clearer and easier to use. We’ve removed duplicated information and reorganised the guide into a clearer step-by-step process for proposing a new market.
What we’re doing
We’re updating the policy to:
- move operational details to the markets guide and onto our webpages, where we can provide more detailed guidance
- remove references to temporary markets, which are managed through a separate temporary event approval process and outside the scope of the policy,
- include our ethics framework, which applies to all City of Sydney policies.
We’re updating the markets guidelines to:
- reorganise the document into a clear step-by-step process that’s easier to follow
- remove the site suitability checklist and market impact assessment attachments and make them available as separate downloads on our website
- move guidance on preparing a market proposal to our markets webpage
- rename the markets site application form to market proposal application to better reflect its purpose and help applicants identify the information they need to provide.
The proposed changes don’t change the principles of the current policy or guide and don’t affect existing licences or consents.
