Cultural policy and action plan

Culture grows from and alongside society. Art and culture can include performing and visual arts, literature, film, new media, architecture, as well as festival and community events. Anything created for or by a particular community is important to us. We support the cultural life of the local area in several ways.

The City's cultural policy

Our Creative City cultural policy and action plan has been developed to guide the arts in central Sydney – the first of its kind for the local area.

To develop the cultural policy, the City of Sydney ran an extensive consultation process that received 2,114 submissions. We talked to more than 1,400 members of the public and 626 individual artists and creative workers, held 34 forums and consultation events, and conducted 2 major City Talks on creative opportunities and challenges for Sydney.

The City invests $36.5 million each year on culture. Council endorsed the cultural policy in August 2014. The paper also presents a 10-year action plan for boosting the cultural lives of our residents, workers and visitors. You can download the policy below.

Public art

Another part of our commitment to a city with a beating cultural heart is to give as many people as possible greater access to art.

Being one of the most visible and accessible types of expression there is, public art is encouraged by the City. Made up of art experts, our public art advisory panel helps us make decisions relating to art in public places.

We’re commissioning local artists to create permanent and temporary projects and encouraging local businesses to commission even more. We’re also facilitating educational and mentoring opportunities for artists wherever we can.

Festivals and events

Not only do festivals and special events add to a city's cultural layer, but they also bring big economic benefits to businesses in the retail, hospitality and tourism sectors. Visitors come from interstate and around the world to be part of events such as New Year's Eve, the Sydney Festival and Chinese New Year.

Each year we invest nearly $3.5 million to help stage major festivals in Sydney. In 2012, we announced sponsorship agreements with the Sydney Writers' Festival, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the Yabun Festival and Australia Day Council. The funding boost is part of the City's vision to attract the world's best events to our hometown all year round.
