New childcare centre project: Green Square
Helping meet demand for quality facilities in the inner city.
Project Status: Completed
What we’re doing
The outpatient building at the former South Sydney Hospital site has been transformed into a 74-place early education and care centre.
Waranara Early Education Centre is part of an exciting new community space at Green Square. The design by Fox Johnston Architects aims to retain the integrity of the existing building while incorporating a contemporary new addition and wrap-around verandah.
Heritage features such as roof cowls have been reinterpreted as skylights. Offices have transformed into light-filled playrooms.
Passive, active and messy play spaces include an outdoor kitchen and digging patch extending into a lively water and sand play area.
The centre received an award for Interior Architecture and was commended in Education Architecture at the 2018 NSW Architecture Awards.
Waranara means ‘to seek’ in the Sydney Aboriginal language.
We appointed Australia’s largest early learning provider, Goodstart Early Learning, to run the centre.
