Why we’re doing this
There are more creative workers in Greater Sydney than anywhere else in Australia. While they’re essential to our economy and way of life, they’re at risk.
Our cultural strategy 2025–2035 includes actions to retain, rebuild and reimagine our creative workforce and cultural infrastructure. These actions were developed in consultation with the creative sector of Sydney and respond to the main challenges we heard the sector is facing.
We’re committed to a continuous process of monitoring and evolving our work to ensure we’re achieving the aims of this strategy. We know things can change quickly for our creative workforce and this annual survey will help us to monitor the sector’s wellbeing and evolve our work in response.
What we’re doing
We’re asking Greater Sydney’s creative workers and creative spaces to share their experiences making and hosting work.
By surveying the sector each year, we intend to unpack key challenges the sector faces and get a sense of how they change over time. This includes access to space, funding and networks to make creative work. We’ll do this by:
- understanding the composition and distribution of our creative workforce
- understanding the costs of using and operating creative spaces
- gauging the confidence or precarity our creative communities are feeling for the year ahead
- monitoring the effectiveness of the support we provide.
We’ll use the information we collect to ensure our direct support for creative work is targeted. We’ll also use it to advocate to a range of partners on areas such as affordable housing for creative workers, and affordable creative production space.
The Greater Sydney creative workers survey asks responders to tell us about their creative practice and how they access space, funding and networks to make creative work.
The Greater Sydney creative spaces survey asks responders to tell us about the kinds of spaces that host creative work and how they run.
How you can give feedback
Both surveys close at 5pm on Wednesday 28 May 2025.
If you’re willing, there is an opportunity for a paid, confidential discussion to elaborate on some aspects of your creative work or space. Individuals who participate in a one-hour, one-on-one discussion will receive a payment of $100 for their time.
If you’re an individual artist that uses space, complete our creative workers survey.
If you’re a sole trader, business or organisation and you’ve operated a space for creative work in Greater Sydney in the past 12 months, complete our creative spaces survey.
If you have questions about this survey or how we will use your answers, please contact our strategy advisor Phoebe Ludemann at [email protected].
