Planned
Works will start in April and take around 6 months to complete, weather permitting.
Why we’re doing this
This park was identified for upgrading as part of our ongoing park renewal program.
We developed the concept plan for the playground upgrade based on your feedback from our consultation in late 2020. We modified the design and in mid 2021 asked the community for more feedback, which Council approved on 26 July 2021.
As a portion of the park is owned by Homes NSW and 2 major Sydney Water stormwater pipes run beneath the new playground, obtaining third party approvals to build the playground and multi-purpose court has unfortunately meant long and extended negotiations. We took the time to extensively negotiate with Sydney Water to ensure the best result for this important community playground.
What we’re doing
The upgrade includes:
- 2 basketball half courts and a netball half court with practice area
- a fenced play area with play tower and climbing challenges
- a sandpit, nature play area and an open cubby house
- trampolines, an inclusive spinning carousel, 2 double swings with toddler cradle and seats, and a large basket swing
- a grassed area with mature trees and more plants
- new tables, seats, 2 water bubblers, barbecue and sheltered picnic facilities.
As part of these upgrade works, we’ll remove 3 small trees and plant around 14 new trees. All other existing trees in the park will be protected during the works.
We expect works to start in April and take around 6 months to complete, weather permitting. Works will take place from 7:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday and 7:30am to 3:30pm on Saturday.
There’ll be some machinery noise and dust. Some street parking may be temporarily unavailable during construction. We’ll minimise these impacts as much as we can.
Some areas of the park will be closed during the upgrade. The sports facilities at Erskineville Oval will remain open and available for use and the oval will remain open to the community. The nearest parks are:
- Lillian Fowler Reserve, Newtown
- Sydney Park Playground, Alexandria
Playground renewal plan
A second stage of the upgrade to the wider park has been included for funding in Council’s 10-year long-term financial plan (LTFP). We’ll invite the public to comment on this future park upgrade separately to the playground renewal works.
