Upgrading lighting and power in Hyde Park
We continue to improve this iconic park and make it safer for all.
In progress
Works started in January 2025 and are expected to take around 18 months to complete, weather permitting.
Sections of the park will be closed for a limited time during the works.
We’re working in:
- Hyde Park north between St James station, Elizabeth Street and the Archibald Fountain.
- Hyde Park south in the area between College Street and the Pool of Reflection. The garden beds and lawns are fenced off to allow plantings to grow.
What we’re doing
The works include:
- replacing old lighting with new fixtures and warm light LEDs to reduce energy consumption
- retaining the heritage park character with light poles designed to resemble the existing light pole silhouette, constructed from sustainable aluminium
- simplifying the lighting in the lawn areas with a reduced number of mast lights providing a wash of light for safety and night-time events
- upgrading the power supply in Hyde Park with discreet power bollards to allow events to access power safely, adding new meters and CCTV cameras.
Why we’re doing this
This project is part of a suite of works identified in the 2006 plan of management and masterplan for Hyde Park.
We consulted with the community on the upgrade in 2021. Council approved this project at its December 2022 meeting. We refined the design and conducted a review of environmental factors in 2024.
