What we’re doing

We are proposing new guidance for outdoor dining in public spaces such as pedestrianised lanes or streets, plazas and smaller parks. This will support the enjoyment of these places, including through outdoor dining.

Why we’re doing this

Well-managed public spaces promote both equitable access and support local businesses by creating places and streets that are comfortable and attractive to all visitors.

Most outdoor dining in the local area is on footpaths, for which we provide guidance about the location and size of outdoor dining.

Earlier in 2023, Council resolved to investigate new guidance for outdoor dining in public places that are not part of the footpath.

The proposed guidance addresses:

  • the clear path of travel, connections for people walking and access to public seating
  • availability of space for common activities undertaken in the public space
  • servicing of outdoor dining through the public space
  • community events
  • setbacks from lawns, gardens, walls and similar structures.
