In response to requests from local residents, we’re proposing to plant more trees on Chelsea Street, Redfern.
Following review of the submissions, the original design has been amended to address concerns related to parking loss, species selection, tree removal and tree replacement. These changes will allow us to increase our canopy cover whilst balancing the needs of the community for on-street parking.
The new proposal will be presented to the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee on Thursday 21 April 2022.

We propose to plant 9 trees within the roadway to place trees away from narrow footpaths and overhead wires. The tree species will be either a deciduous tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) or an evergreen tree (Waterhousia floribunda), depending on community feedback. These trees will provide shade and make the street more pleasant.
The additional trees will remove 5 to 6 parking spaces depending on the final design.
We also propose to amend the street tree master plan for trees planted in the footpath, as the current Blue berry ash have not performed as expected. The proposed tree species is Tristaniopsis laurina ‘Luscious’ (water gum).
Consultation closes at 5pm on Monday 23 November 2020.
