Child restraint checks

City of Sydney residents

The child restraint check program is now closed for the 2022-23 financial year.

We provide vouchers for use at 1 of 3 Roads and Maritime Services approved restraint checking stations. You can watch the installation process and learn how to adjust shoulder straps to appropriate heights and find out when a child is ready to move to a bigger seat.

Vouchers will cover the cost of the check or installation. Any parts or accessories will be at your expense.

Australian law requires children travelling in cars to be secured in approved restraints, which means children:

  • younger than 6 months must be secured in a rear-facing restraint
  • 6 months to 4 years must be secured in a rear or forward-facing restraint
  • 4 to 7 years must be secured in a forward-facing restraint or booster seat
  • younger than 4 years must travel in the back seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows.

If you live outside the City of Sydney local area, please contact your local council for information about nearby child restraint checks.
