We’re updating our urban ecology plan to guide how we protect and enhance wildlife and local ecosystems.

We want to know about how you connect to nature and which parts of local biodiversity are most important to you. Biodiversity is the variety of all life on Earth. It includes all plants, animals and microorganisms.

Your feedback will help us design a plan that reflects community values and strengthens connections between you and the environment.

Everyone has a role to play. We invite you to share your ideas.

What we’re doing

Our parks, street gardens, bushland and waterways are home to a wide range of wildlife and plant life. They enable people to connect with nature, which is vital for health and wellbeing.

Almost all the original vegetation in our area has been changed or removed since European arrival but we’re restoring bush and habitat to increase biodiversity.

Working with our communities, including local land managers and bushcare groups, will help us identify challenges and opportunities. Plant and animal surveys will inform actions at key sites and support for identified species.

Since 2015, we have:

  • increased natural areas from 4.2 hectares to over 15 hectares
  • built 109 nest boxes for birds, bats and possums
  • installed 19 native beehives in our parks and bush restoration areas.

More than 5,000 volunteers have helped us increase local biodiversity.

Our updated urban ecology plan will align with our environmental strategy and greening Sydney strategy to achieve the goals for urban biodiversity, habitat and ecological health.
