What we’re doing

The City of Sydney and NSW Government propose to extend the George Street pedestrian boulevard from Essex Street to Alfred Street.

Our proposal includes:

  • closing the eastern side of George Street to traffic, converting it into a pedestrian space with seating, trees, lighting and paving up to the light rail tracks
  • keeping a vehicle lane on the western side of George Street for traffic travelling south
  • installing a 1.8m wide pedestrian refuge with bollards between the road and the light rail tracks
  • removing the signalised intersections at Essex and George streets, and at Alfred and George streets.

This proposal will continue the current design for the pedestrianised areas along George Street. It will also complement the NSW Government’s plans to make the outdoor dining areas in The Rocks permanent.

Why we’re doing this

The proposal is the last stage in the George Street pedestrianisation. It will complete our vision of a fully pedestrianised George Street from Circular Quay to Central, with 39,000 square metres of former roads reclaimed for people.
