If you’re passionate about future change but not sure how to go about it, this program aims to build your civic knowledge, skills and motivation through community-based civic education and youth leadership development.

About the program

The City of Sydney recognises young people as rising leaders and innovators in community problem-solving, however our 2023 wellbeing survey showed that fewer young people feel connected or involved in decisions that affect them. Only 20% of people aged 16-29 had taken part in decision-making, and just 41% felt a strong sense of community connection - well below the 63% reported by older age groups.

The changemakers launchpad program addresses this gap by equipping young people with the skills, confidence and networks to drive meaningful change and strengthen democratic participation.

Following a successful first year in 2025, the program returns in 2026 with expanded opportunities. Through interactive workshops, networking opportunities and events, you'll understand how governments function and how you can play an active role in existing systems. You'll develop practical skills in storytelling and communication, explore your leadership strengths, and learn strategies for long-term community engagement whilst connecting with others who care about making a difference.

The changemakers launchpad program is part of our emerging civic leaders series, and supports a city for all, our social sustainability plan.

Who is this program for?

You don’t need prior experience in civic leadership – just a passion for making a difference and a willingness to learn. This program will help build your foundational knowledge and tools to turn your passion into action.

We’re looking for young people aged 16 to 24 who:

  • care about community issues, social change and advocacy
  • want to learn how governments work and how to influence change
  • live, work or study in the City of Sydney local area
  • can commit to attending all sessions outlined in the program structure.

We want to create an inclusive and supportive environment where diverse perspectives are valued. We actively encourage applications from people of all cultural backgrounds, gender identities, abilities, life circumstances and locations in our local area.

Program structure

The changemakers launchpad program runs from 18 March to 27 June 2026. The program is a mix of 2.5-hour workshops and events from 5.30pm to 8pm and an extended final event.
