Why we’re doing this

The draft managing waste in public places – local approvals policy has been developed to replace the current policy, adopted by Council in October 2022.

Local approvals policies must be reviewed after each Council election.

What we’re doing

The purpose of the policy is to:

  • determine requirements for waste management activities in public places
  • identify the activities that need to obtain relevant approvals
  • minimise the impact of waste management activities on the community.
  • The policy applies to residents and businesses operating in our area, including domestic waste collection. Street cleaning operations are not addressed under this policy.

The draft policy includes the following updates:

  • part 2 approvals section reflects that approvals are not ‘permanent’ and make criteria used to assess applications clearer in alignment with the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993
  • clarity and readability improvements
  • reflect changes to legislation and relevant state authorities
  • incorporate strategic directions including pedestrian priority and accessibility.

Next steps

After this consultation, we’ll consider all feedback and report the results to Council. If Council approves the policy, it will be published on our website.
