Have your say on new cycling connections in Alexandria and Erskineville
We’re proposing connections in Alexandria and Erskineville that will improve safety and access for people walking and riding.
Project Status: Closed
Council approved the new cycling connections at its meeting in May 2021. The works are expected to start in early 2022.
Public consultation period to
Henderson Road, Railway Parade and Bridge Street
Why we’re doing this
This project will allow for a safe connection to the new Wilson and Burren streets cycleways. Monitoring and evaluation of the current pop-up cycleway confirms this is a well-used and important cycling connection.
What we’re doing
Proposed works for this area:
- We will install a permanent cycleway with a similar layout to the pop-up cycleway. The temporary barriers will be replaced with permanent concrete barriers.
- Railway Parade will be permanently closed to traffic travelling east from Swanson Street.
- Footpaths will be widened on Railway Parade near Erskineville station.
Ashmore and Harley streets
Why we’re doing this
This project will connect the Henderson Road cycleway to the existing Belmont Street cycling connection and Bowden Street cycleway.
What we’re doing
Proposed works for this area:
- There will be a bidirectional cycleway on Ashmore Street between Fox Avenue and Mitchell Road and a set of 1-way cycleways in the same direction as traffic on Harley Street between Mitchell Road and McEvoy Street.
- The crossing on Mitchell Road will be upgraded to increase safety for people walking and riding.
Mitchell Road and Huntley Street
Why we’re doing this
This project will connect Sydney Park to the Belmont Street cycling connection.
What we’re doing
Proposed works for this area:
- There will be a 2-way cycleway on Mitchell Road between Sydney Park Road and Huntley Street
- There will be a 2-way cycleway on Huntley Street between Mitchell Road and Belmont Street.
Alexandria and Erskineville shared paths
Why we’re doing this
4 new shared paths will create safe connections between local schools.
What we’re doing
Shared paths will be built on the:
- southern footpath on Buckland Street between Mitchell Road and the western school boundary
- northern footpath on Mitchell Road between Buckland and Brown streets
- northern footpath on Swanson Street between Newton and Park streets
- southern footpath on Swanson Street between Fox and Elliott avenues.
