What we’re doing

We propose to install new raised planting beds and replace the existing palms in the Crystal Street Plaza.

We plan to install 10 large raised planters. This will increase the green cover in the plaza by 550% from around 30m2 to 200m2.

We'll plant 13 new canopy trees to replace the existing palms. The tree species will be Waterhousea floribunda and has been selected as the most suitable species for the site. Once the trees reach maturity this will provide around 30% canopy cover across the plaza.

New seating will be provided for people to sit and relax on. The plaza will keep a 6m wide clear zone to allow for people walking, riding and emergency vehicles to share the space as required.

Why we’re doing this

These works follow our planting works within the Danks Street precinct over the past 18 months. It also reflects the targets set out in the Greening Sydney strategy which aim to increase tree canopy and provide more shade to help cool the city.

This project is part of the Greening Our City grant program that is funded by the NSW Government in association with Local Government NSW.
