Upgrading work at The Crescent and Federal Park

We’re creating more green open spaces and recreational areas for everyone to enjoy.

Project Status: Completed

What we’re doing

Construction on the final stages of these works is nearly complete.

We need to obtain final certifications on the skate ramp and the rest of the park.

The works will open up the 5 archways of the Glebe railway viaduct, create a large play area near Federal Park playing field and create a new open space.

Once complete, the works will include:

  • new recreational open space, west of the Glebe railway viaduct
  • a skate plaza and adjacent mini skate ramp
  • a new, larger playground
  • shared paths for people walking and riding bikes throughout the park
  • groves of native trees and large lawn areas
  • picnic areas with seating and barbecues
  • conservation works to the Glebe railway viaduct.

Impacts and disruptions

The work is expected to be completed in mid-2021, weather permitting. It will take place from 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday and 7.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday.

We will take steps to minimise construction impacts. Some areas of the park will be fenced off during works for safety. This will also minimise disturbance from construction vehicles accessing the site. We will reopen these areas as quickly as possible.

This project is part of our Johnstons Creek masterplan, which will create a ribbon of parklands around the Glebe Peninsula. We’re reviewing community feedback about a proposal to close part of Chapman Road in Annandale to create an extra 1,500 square metres of open space for community sports and recreation in this area.

Naturalisation project

Sydney Water will naturalise Johnstons Creek between Rozelle Bay and The Crescent. The project includes creating a natural planted stormwater system and increasing salt marsh around the creek. The footbridge near Dalgal Way will be replaced, new seating, a boardwalk and paths will be created.

The project will improve the local environment and create a beautiful space for everyone to enjoy. Construction will start in January 2020 and is expected to finish mid-2021. Visit Sydney Water to find out more.
