Temporary closure of George Street, Bridge Street to Essex Street

The City of Sydney and the NSW Government are extending the pedestrian boulevard on George Street from Bridge Street to Essex Street.

Project Status: In progress

Why we’re doing this

Our proposal to extend the pedestrianisation of George Street from Hunter Street to Essex Street was on public exhibition during October and November 2022.

The proposal was approved by Council in December 2022. You can view the decision details.

George Street was closed to vehicles between Hunter and Bridge streets in January 2023, and we converted the area into a brightly coloured pedestrian space with seats for people to enjoy.

Once complete, our vision of a fully pedestrianised George Street from Circular Quay to Central will be a step closer, with over 20,000 square metres of former roadway reclaimed for people.

What we’re doing

We’re now extending the closure of George Street to Essex Street. We’ll add colour and seating to the space to support local businesses, as we have done between Hunter and Bridge streets.

For better access for people walking, these traffic changes will be in place:

  • Road closures of the northbound and southbound traffic lane of George Street, from Essex Street to Bridge Street
  • Road closure of Dalley Street at George Street
  • No left or right turns from Grosvenor and Bridge streets into George Street
  • Removal of the no right turn restriction on Grosvenor Street at Harrington Street
  • New ‘no left turn, vehicles under 9m excepted’ sign on Harrington Street (southbound) at Grosvenor Street
  • Removal of the no right turn restriction and new right turn only restriction on George Street (southbound) at Essex Street
  • New left turn only restrictions on Essex Street (eastbound) to George Street
  • Removal of one 2 hour and 4 hour ticket parking space and one mobility parking space on Harrington Street at Essex Street
  • Removal of one loading zone/4 hour ticket parking space and 4m of motorcycle only parking on Harrington Street at Grosvenor Street
  • Removal of 6 loading zones/4 hour ticket parking spaces and one mobility parking space on Grosvenor Street between Harrington and George Street
  • Removal of one 1 hour and 4 hour ticket parking space on Essex Street north of Harrington Street.

Vehicle access to local properties will be maintained via diversions shown in the local access plan.
