How to use our archives collection
The City archives holds more than one million records from 1842, when the Council was established, to recent years.

Look to our archives if you’re interested in exploring the history of Sydney.
As the oldest municipal council in NSW, we have governed, designed and created the city’s urban environment. Our archives, civic history and collections chart our contributions to public life.
We also have a large number of building and development records, the most recent dating to 2008.
What you need to do
- Access and search the catalogue.
- Not sure where to start? Let us know what you’re looking for and request a City record.
- We provide a digital copying service.
- If the archives you seek aren't available digitally, a reading room service is available by appointment. Contact us for assistance. Reading room availability may change at short notice due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
Before you start
This collection includes development and building applications and related records. Only those records that have been transferred to the City Archives are available through this site with the most recent being about 2008. For more recent records, search development applications.
