Join our Local Planning Panel
In progress
- Applications are open now
- Applications close Friday 31 October at 5pm
We’re looking for people living in our local area to become members of our Local Planning Panel.
The Local Planning Panel helps keep the planning system open and accountable, protecting against corruption and supporting better decisions for our city.
Its work spans straightforward applications through to those that are more complex or highly debated.
The panel has 4 members. It includes a chair, nominated by the Minister for Planning, 2 expert members selected by Council and approved by the Minister for Planning, and a community representative selected by Council.
No planning expertise is required. The role of the community representative is to ensure local insights and knowledge are considered as part of the panel’s decision-making.
The commitment
There are about 16 meetings a year.
We intend to have 4 community representatives who’ll alternate across meetings and each can expect to attend around 3 meetings a year.
Selection criteria
Community representatives are selected on the basis they:
- understand the City of Sydney’s area and issues of concern to local communities
- can form independent views and contribute constructively to the determination of applications
- have a basic level of understanding of the planning system – for example, knowledge of the council’s local environmental plan, development control plans, local strategic planning statement or community strategic plan
- follow the code of conduct for local planning panel members and the local planning panel’s operational procedures.
Payment
Payment rates are set by the Minister for Planning. Community representatives are currently paid $1,500 plus GST for each meeting.
How to apply
Apply by 5pm on Friday 31 October.
Councillors, property developers and real estate agents can’t join the panel.
