Apply for a residential parking permit
Parking permits are issued to eligible residents for the parking area where they live. Permits exempt residents from time limits and parking meter fees in most nearby parking spaces where the sign includes the words ‘permit holders excepted’.
Project Status: When you need to do this
In most City of Sydney neighbourhoods households living in eligible buildings that do not have any onsite parking can apply for up to 2 permits. Households in Kings Cross area 19 can apply for up to 1 permit – see information below on zone A and B permit limits.
Residents of multi-unit properties built after 1996 are generally not eligible for a parking permit. See property restrictions section below.
No visitor or business permits are available in the Central Sydney permit area and no residential permits are available for new applicants.

The vehicle must be registered in your name and to your residential address. If the car is a company vehicle, you must also have a letter from the company that states your home address confirming that you are a company employee and you have full use of the vehicle.

These documents must show your name and residential address. Documents addressed to a post office box will not be accepted. Acceptable documents include: utility bill (electricity, gas, water), phone bill, bank statement, pension/health care card, current lease, driver licence, council rates notice, electoral card, or other official government correspondence. Documents relating to your vehicle cannot be used as proof of residence.
When you move house it can take a while to update your new address details. A temporary parking permit may be issued to tenants or owners of eligible properties. Contact us for more information. We will remind you to renew your permit before it expires. Find out more about temporary parking permits.

Environmental discounts: We aim to demonstrate environmental leadership and are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change. In 2008, we introduced a new pricing schedule with lower annual permit fees to encourage the use of cleaner vehicles.
Green vehicle guide rating: The scaled annual permit fees are based on the star rating of your vehicle in the federal government's green vehicle guide.
