  • Australian Poetry Slam: Heat high school students

    Join the audience or take to the stage at Word Travel’s spoken word heat just for high school students. This fun event at Green Square Library will be hosted by talented spoken word poet, Isabella Luna.

    Sign up at 6pm to perform in the Australian Poetry Slam heat starting at 6.30pm.

    Writers and performers are given a mic and 2 minutes to share their original piece and impress the judges chosen from the live audience. 2 writers from the slam heat will go on to perform at the Australian Poetry Slam Sydney Final.

    To participate or watch the slam, make sure to book a seat in the audience.

    Hip-hop dance meets gaming technology in this series of free school holiday workshops led by Shaun Parker & Company.

    Based on their captivating new live dance performance In the Zone, these interactive workshops feature the groundbreaking new AirSticks technology. Developed by Australian drummer, composer, and sound and instrument designer Alon Ilsar PhD, the hand-held AirSticks create live sound through movement.

    Hip-hop artist and street dancer Libby Montilla will teach the kids how to interact with this fun, body-music technology. They’ll enter the world of a video game through the dance forms of locking, popping, waving and body-ticking and self-generated electronic soundscapes.
    These free workshop are suitable for kids 8 to 15 years. Bookings are recommended as places are limited to 10 participants at each workshop.

    Bring your keen coders to our free 4-week coding series. They’ll gain confidence using the coding environment, MIT Scratch, and find out how to build games and animations. Watch them grow their competence by adding new skills and concepts each week to build on previous activities.

    MIT Scratch offers a fun introduction to block coding – encouraging creative thinking, systematic reasoning and collaboration.

    These hands-on workshops run for 1 hour each week and are suitable for 9 to 12 year olds with no prior experience necessary.

    Places are free, however, you must book in and attend for all sessions. The workshops have a capacity of 8, so bookings are recommended.

    Explore the new Darling Square Library and get familiar with our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) equipment at this after-school drop-in series. Test drive kits from our makerspace collection, including robots, coding equipment and electronics.

    Each fortnight, one of our makerspace kits will be selected and demonstrated by experienced library staff. Become a library member to borrow and take one home.

    Monday 4 November (4pm – 5pm): Edison Robot v2.0
    Beginners can learn about robots using their computer or tablet to program this Lego-compatible robot in one of 3 languages. Drive Edison over pre-programmed barcodes to activate functions like ‘avoid obstacles.’ Ages 5+

    Monday 11 November (4pm – 5pm): Ozobot Bit 2.0
    Tinker with this highly-programmable robot. Control it by drawing lines and colour segments or use a free online block-based programming editor. Create and send Ozobot through mazes and racetracks. Ages 5+

    Monday 18 November (4pm – 5pm): Sphero SPRK+ edition
    Use a free app to control the ball via Bluetooth and take part in hands-on activities. This robotic ball inspires curiosity, creativity and invention through connected play and coding. Ages 5+

    Monday 25 November (4pm – 5pm): LittleBits Synth Kit
    Combine our littleBits electronic building blocks to create fun electrical circuits. Ages 5+

    Monday 2 December (4pm – 5pm): Edison Robot v2.0
