    Schools out, so to celebrate, we’ve got free hands-on making sessions for kids. They’ll have fun while they get creative with electronics and robotics. Just BYO imagination and get constructing.

    This school holidays we’ll be exploring motion, electronics and robotics.

    Makedo making: 8-12 years
    Use our makedo tools to construct your own cardboard creations including sculptures, wearable costumes and toys.
    Kings Cross: Tuesday 9 July: 1pm-2pm

    Marble run: 8-12 years
    Use our new marble run peg boards to guide balls through a series of courses.
    Customs House: Tuesday 9 July: 11am-1pm
    Waterloo: Friday 19 July: 11am-12pm

    Junk bots: 5-8 years
    Combine recycled materials and a DC motor to create a moving junk bot.
    Green Square: Monday, 8 July: 11am-12pm
    Newtown: Thursday 18 July: 11am-12pm

    littleBits: 8-12 years
    Combine our littleBits electronic building blocks to create fun electrical circuits.
    Ultimo: Thursday 11 July: 11am-12pm

    Edison Robots (5-8 years)
    Build Lego armour and put your robot to the test in Hebocon-style robotic play
    Surry Hills: Wednesday, 10 July: 11am-12pm

    Workshops are free, however bookings are recommended as places are limited.

  • National Young Writers Festival: Sydney launch

    Join festival directors Jesse Oliver, Bonnie Stevens and Ellen Harvey to get a taste of the 2019 festival.

    Each year, National Young Writers Festival (NYWF) brings together Australia’s most innovative young writers. Working in new and traditional forms, their writing varies from zines, comics, blogging, screenwriting, and poetry to spoken word, hip hop music, journalism, autobiography, comedy, songwriting and prose. The festival presents writing in its broadest sense through panels, discussions, workshops, launches, performances, readings, installations, and more.

    NYWF gives young writers a place to present their work and share ideas, learn about the industry and meet like-minded people in a friendly festival atmosphere.

    With our festival teaser, get a taste of the festival in this 2-hour celebration of writers and their stories. Featuring spoken word, music and comedy from Elliot Cameron, Robin Eames, Nina Oyama, Merryana Salem, Jack Gow, Allison Ghallager, Pola Fanous and Srisha.

    Enjoy live readings, performances and a few festival games to understand what our festival is all about before you attend the 4-day event in October.

    The festival runs from 3 to 6 October 2019.

    Bookings are recommended. Suitable for ages 16 years and over.

  • Australian Poetry Slam: Newtown heat for high school students

    Word Travel’s spoken word heat is just for high school students. This fun event will be hosted by talented spoken word poet, Lorin Elizabeth.

    Sign up at 5pm to perform in the Australian Poetry Slam heat starting at 5.30pm.

    Writers and performers are given a mic and 2 minutes to share their original piece and impress the judges chosen from the live audience. 2 writers from the slam heat will go on to perform at the Australian Poetry Slam Sydney Final.

    To participate or watch the slam, make sure to book a seat in the audience.

    About Lorin Elizabeth
    Lorin is a spoken word poet, organiser and teaching artist from Thirroul. She co-founded Enough Said Poetry Slam and is published in Going Down Swinging’s audio anthology. Elizabeth has toured the USA poetry slam circuit and was a featured performer at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Albuquerque. She has also featured at Canberra’s Noted Festival, Queensland Poetry Festival and Yours & Owls Music Festival. Lorin has been a workshop facilitator and panelist for The Stella Prize’s Girls Write Up program and hosted The Rumble Youth Slam with Word Travels at Sydney Writers’ Festival. She has self-published an EP called Poems.
