Energy and waste amendment 2018 – development control plans

Following community consultation, Council approved these amendments.

View decision

We invite your feedback on the energy and waste amendment to the Sydney Development Control Plan 2012 and Green Square Development Control Plan 2012.

The changes strengthen the application of ecologically sustainable development principles in new developments and major refurbishments, update waste provisions and improve the clarity of existing ecologically sustainable development provisions.

The amendment proposes a minimum 5.5 star base building rating for new commercial office buildings or major commercial office refurbishments of 1,000 square metres or more, under the National Australian Built Environment Rating Scheme (NABERS).

It also updates provisions on storage and management of waste to align with the City's proposed guidelines for waste management in new developments. These guidelines replace our 2005 policy on waste minimisation in new developments.

The amendment is a direct response to actions in the City's Environmental Action 2016–2021 strategy and action plan.
